    Rated 3 out of 5 by from Beautiful Exterior--Inadequate Interior The iconic embroidered pony is beautiful, and the backpack is constructed from quality canvas material. It is also lined in a classic tartan plaid print. This is one of the few backpacks offered by Ralph Lauren that has an exterior side bottle/umbrella pocket. As well, the backpack comes with a separate pencil case. This isn't a pen case because the case isn't lined with waterproof material. If pens are placed in the case and leak, the leakage will seep through the case, ruining the canvas. This could be easily solved by lining the case with waterproof material. Although this backpack is listed as a boys/girls backpack, the dimensions are almost identical to the dimensions of the men's canvas backpacks, which is great since none of the men's canvas backpacks offer an exterior side pocket. The backpack also has an exterior zip pocket which can hold a few--emphasis on the "few"--items but is barely able to hold a TSA approved 3-1-1 bag. Where this backpack sadly fails--which is also true for the men's canvas backpacks--is in the interior design, or rather lack thereof. There is only one slightly cushioned pocket in the interior to hold a laptop/tablet/computer, and this is the extent of the interior: one pocket with the rest being just open space. There are no other interior pockets--zippered or open--to hold any laptop/ tablet/ computer accessories, a phone, a passport, or any other items. This is the only backpack that I own that is severely lacking in interior pockets. Whatever organization occurs with what is placed within the interior of this backpack will be the responsibility of the purchaser of the backpack. The designers of this backpack--and other RL backpacks--have apparently never actually used a backpack for school, work, or travel. I purchased this backpack to replace a Coach canvas backpack that I have used for travel for many years. Unfortunately, this RL backpack is not an acceptable replacement. I strongly suggest that the designers look at the backpacks of other brands and design backpacks that are competitive in design. The Polo pony should stand for more than just a beautiful brand symbol; it should stand for quality material and design. This backpack is more for show than for real functionality. Overall, the beautiful exterior is ruined by the inadequate interior.
