Canvas Field Jacket is rated out of 5 by 2.Rated 3 out of 5 by Arkansas Sportsman from Ralph Lauren was SO CLOSE with this one. I wanted to love this jacket, and I almost did. The pre-faded color is impeccable, the thoughtful button placement is exactly what you need to keep out the cold on those windy days around town or a ranch, and the blanket flannel lining, corduroy collar, and cuffs are about as cozy as you can get while maintaining an air of sartorial flair. The heritage of influence from a Ralph Lauren field jacket for hunting from the late 60s is a nod to the storied past of Polo Ralph Lauren as a stalwart in North America men’s fashion, derived from practical pieces you could live your life in. Sadly, this jacket is not that. Enter the pockets. The high pockets are perfect. Leather trim, blanket lined, and deep enough for your paws (albeit snug with gloves on). The low pockets, influenced by field jackets and originally made to hold live and spent shells, are thin and unstructured. This wouldn’t be such a problem if they had some type of brass button or snap closure, but they don’t. I’m deducting a star because if I kept this jacket, that’s the first thing I would do-take it to a tailor and add the capability to secure the pockets to make them functional. The shell pockets are heritage theatre, and my biggest qualm with this “field jacket”. My thought was to purchase this piece to wear to work/around town, the family cabin where we throw clays, and to the local gun club for a three season piece in lieu of a dedicated shell vest. It’s handsome as all get out, after all. The problem is that plenty of my duck hunting gear has slots for shells just like this jacket. The only difference-my gear actually holds shells. I love almost everything about this jacket, I could even live with the bottom pockets being somewhat flimsy. But to design and re-introduce a heritage piece with dedicated shell slots that you can fit shells in, but are so loose and shallow that if you bend over to tie your shoe or pick something up off the floor, all of the shells dump out onto the ground, is antithetical to the reason this piece should’ve been brought back in the first place. It’s clear the design team missed on this one. It looks like a field jacket, but it cannot, and should not, be used as one.Date published: 2026-01-09
