The Icons of Fall

Rich with pattern, layers, and artistry, these two pieces are the most endearing and enduring for this season and beyond.
The Patterned Sweater
These cozy keepsakes tell a story that goes beyond practicality.
Any sweater worth having will never be just a sweater. The ones you always reach for feature heritage techniques that not only incorporate texture, color, or pattern but also weave a story about how the piece was made, and where it came from. We know that the sweater (or the jumper, jersey, or pullover) has its origins in the Irish and Scottish fishermen of the late 19th century, who wore knit wool tops that were treated with oils to protect from their cold, wet climates. From there, knitwear became more intricate as it was adapted by other cultures that incorporated their artistry. The singular Fair Isle technique of the Shetland Islands, the textured Aran knits of Ireland (from whence came Ralph’s beloved cable knit), the Nordic Selbus, Icelandic lopapeysas, and Cowichans from Vancouver Island all contribute to the collective heritage of knitwear; each stitch, graphic design, and color palette providing a moment in time from a specific place.
This season, Polo’s knitwear channels these traditions in a few key pieces that give romance to the hearty, patterned sweaters we all turn to each winter. A women’s style is outfitted with a Polo collar and keyhole detail, created with a hand-dyed wool-blend yarn that is intarsia knit, depicting folk-inspired florals across the body and slightly puffed sleeves. It’s all done in collaboration with Manos del Uruguay, the 58-year-old, not-for-profit knitwear collective that employs women artisans across 12 cooperatives in the Uruguayan countryside. Another uses a Fair Isle–inspired pattern of geometric motifs on a shawl-collar style to marry warmth, texture, and craftsmanship with an earthy palette.
The Polo Blaze
Can a singular handbag do everything—and look great at the same time? The new Polo Blaze is the answer to an age-old question.
It’s a familiar scene for almost any woman whose busy life calls for a constant rotation of handbags: switching out the contents of one to another. Grabbing lipsticks and wallets; fishing out sets of keys and coiled chargers from hidden corners and folds. Leaving errant slips of paper receipts and matchbooks behind for future rediscovery, along with the scribbled reminders of old coffee dates and past dinners—and that odd ticket stub to the ballet that ended with a late-night bodega stop. No, swapping handbags isn’t, well, rocket science, but in the midst of life’s day-to-day hustle and bustle it can be daunting enough to make you want to avoid it altogether—and to always be on the lookout for that bag that finally does it all; something both day and night; practical but elevated; classic yet modern. And, of course, beautifully made and exciting to carry, a thing that feels not just right for now but for years to come.
The newest member of Polo’s handbag collection—the Polo Blaze—is, as its name might suggest, just such a thing. It’s a feat that’s achieved through a design (and a selection of sizes) that somehow anticipates the many facets and personas of one’s outward life; the duality of polish and edge; the juxtaposition of city and country; and the increasing need we all have to be many things, all in the course of just one day. “Blaze” also refers to the wide, vertical mark that runs down the middle of a horse’s face; that spot, as any rider can tell you, where they commonly like to be scratched if you know them well. That’s just the beginning of this bag’s connection to the elegant world of equestrian life. It also takes inspiration from the finely wrought detailing of traditional saddlery. The color palette of chocolate, black, forest green, mushroom, and oxblood is richly burnished, as if from good use and fine care, and the bag’s combination of abstract curves and deconstructed layering—the leather has been laser-cut to mimic saddlery components—subtly evoke the sculptural precision and romance of an English tack room.

Then there’s the hardware, which echoes not just the linked components of bits and bridles, but a door-knocker logo found on vintage Polo satchels from the ’90s, a detail that gives the bag an instant downtown edge. These metal accents come in either a softly brushed brass or polished nickel, finishes that gracefully stand out against the bag’s different materials—a shiny crinkled leather or a textured goat leather—and might inspire you to accessorize with a vintage cuff, a simple pair of hoop earrings, or other daily jewelry classics. It is ultimately that attention to detail in textures, materials, and shapes that lends to the versatility of the Polo Blaze. It’s a handbag that can move between the proverbial downtown neighborhood wherever you live— sharp, chic, and striking—and the more uptown scene of tradition and polish. Wherever you take it, the Polo Blaze cuts a trail of its very own.
