One Bag For All

Can a singular handbag do everything—and look great at the same time? The new Polo Blaze is the answer to an age-old question.
By Shannon Adducci
It’s a familiar scene for almost any woman whose busy life calls for a constant rotation of bags: switching out the contents of one to another. Grabbing lipsticks and wallets; fishing out sets of keys and coiled chargers from hidden corners and folds. Leaving errant slips of paper receipts and matchbooks behind for future rediscovery, along with the scribbled reminders of old coffee dates and past dinners—and that odd ticket stub to the ballet that ended with a late-night bodega stop.

No, swapping bags isn’t, well, rocket science, but in the midst of life’s day-to-day hustle and bustle it can be daunting enough to make you want to avoid it altogether—and to always be on the lookout for that bag that finally does it all: something both day and night; practical but elevated; classic yet modern. And, of course, beautifully made and exciting to carry, a thing that feels not just right for now but for years to come. The newest member to Polo’s bag collection—the Polo Blaze—is, as its name might suggest, just such a thing. It’s a feat that’s achieved through a design (and a selection of sizes) that somehow anticipates the many facets and personas of one’s outward life: the duality of polish and edge; the juxtaposition of city and country; and the increasing need we all have to be many things, all in the course of just one day.

The Polo Blaze is a bag that can move between the proverbial downtown—sharp, chic and striking—and uptown tradition
“Blaze” also refers to the wide, vertical mark that runs down the middle of a horse’s face; that spot, as any rider can tell you, where they commonly like to be scratched if you know them well. That’s just the beginning of this bag’s connection to the elegant world of equestrian life. It also takes inspiration from the finely wrought detailing of traditional saddlery. The color palette of chocolate, black, forest green, mushroom, and oxblood is richly burnished, as if from good use and fine care, and the bag’s combination of abstract curves and deconstructed layering—the leather has been laser cut to mimic saddlery components—subtly evokes the sculptural precision and romance of an English tack room. Then there’s the hardware, which echoes not just the linked components of bits and bridles, but a door-knocker logo found on vintage Polo satchels from the ’90s, a detail that gives the bag an instant downtown edge. These metal accents come in either a softly brushed brass or a polished nickel, finishes that gracefully stand out against the bag’s different materials—a shiny crinkled leather or a textured goat leather—and might inspire you to accessorize with a vintage cuff, a simple pair of hoop earrings, or other daily jewelry classics.
It is ultimately that attention to detail in textures, materials, and shapes that lends to the versatility of the Polo Blaze. It’s a bag that can move between the proverbial downtown neighborhood wherever you live— sharp, chic, and striking—and the more uptown scene of tradition and polish. Wherever you take it, the Polo Blaze cuts a trail of its very own.
